What the readers of The Black Girls Guide have to say .

“today was one of the worst days, I just locked myself in the office and cried. I am the only black person in my department and it is very difficult to be a part of the team…”

“…a book I will definitely be visiting from time to time as I grow in my corporate journey”

“…most of us, as black women, have similar experiences as captured in the book and we just carry on because we must be grateful we have jobs, the book has truly challenged me to give more thought and be more deliberate about my own development. And you have also affirmed that being kind, gentle, caring and soft spoken is not a weakness”

“As a black woman, I have experienced my share of unfairness in the workplace, especially from other black women…the book has been like getting advice from a big sister I never had…”

“I have lived so much of my life afraid, afraid of becoming who I know my heart needs me to be…thank you for liberating us…the book is a light needed by every woman in South Africa”

“…the book came when I needed it. I have been feeling stuck and just not knowing how to take up space with the opportunities I have been given…the book has helped me to get unstuck”

“You just reminded me- that black people, black women are intelligent. Thank you”

“Thank you for being the big sister in the form of a book for all of us”

What is the essence of Indima Yam: Guiding You Back to You
What is the objective of Indima Yam: Helping you understand your “I” in order to understand your “Y”, as you navigate the world and the workplace.

What are the principles for the work carried out by Indima Yam:
  • Self-Understanding
  • Self-Love
  • Self-Care

What we do .

We live in a world and a time that is so demanding of us- mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically and financially. It is therefore urgent now, more than ever, those create and cultivate workplaces that will be equally held accountable for the wellbeing of their employees, in order, to ultimately deliver the best customer service.

Simon Sinek says “Employees are people, customers are people, stakeholders are people, if you do not understand people, you do not understand business”.

A lot of change and uncertainty was further introduced when the world was flipped on its head by the COVID-19 pandemic. People had to work from the comforts (or not so comfortable) of their own homes, consume more of their resources than they otherwise would have, some managers got comfortable with encroaching staffs personal time and space…people with children had to deal with “fending off” their children whilst taking endless MS Teams and Zoom meetings…

Therefore, where does the preparation for a workplace of this nature “start” and “end”. Undergraduate degrees technically prepare the graduate for the world of work, what about the other stuff?…What about the managers in these century old organisations, how are they continually prepared to lead younger generations of future leaders?

The Framework:
Organisations essentially comprise of x3 living organisms i.e.

  • The enterprise
  • The teams
  • The individual

There is an expectation of “sustainable success” from each of these x3 layers, however, the root of all x3 begins with the individual

What needs to happen:

The individual needs to be clear on their personal “I”- who they are, what they enjoy, what they do not enjoy etc. in order to be able to fulfil their personal “Y”- why am I here? Why am I in this job?
